Lyrics

I remember how You told me
That life may not be easy
And everything that I need
You’ve already given me

I remember how You told me
I can trust You completely
So why am I doubting
When You proved that You’d fight for me

You’ve walked me through fires
Pulled me from flames
If You’re in this with me
I won’t be afraid

When the smoke billows higher, oh and higher
And it feels like I can barely breathe
I’ll walk through these fires
Cause You’re walking with me

I’m changed by Your mercy
Covered by Your peace
I’m living out the victory
Doesn’t mean I won’t feel the heat

You’ve walked me through fires
Pulled me from flames
If You’re in this with me
I won’t be afraid

When the smoke billows higher, oh and higher
And it feels like I can barely breathe
I’ll walk through these fires
Cause You’re walking with me

I can face anything
Cause You’re here with me
I can do all things
Cause You strengthen me

I remember how You showed me
The price of my redemption
Lord, how could I question
When You proved that You’d die for me

You’ve walked me through fires
Pulled me from flames
If You’re in this with me
I won’t be afraid

When the smoke billows higher, oh and higher
And it feels like I can barely breathe
I’ll walk through these fires
Cause You’re walking with me

About This Song

I’ve been married to my wife, Heather, for 12 years and I am the father of 2 boys and 2 girls. The day after our youngest daughter Emery was born, she had an MRI that revealed a rare brain condition. What we were told next changed our future forever; the left side of her brain is dying. That day, we experienced equal parts joy and sorrow. Our hearts were in a million pieces and for the first time in our lives our need for God was greater than anything else. Since then we’ve had more doctors appointments than we can count. Emery has had seizures and emergency hospital visits. We still have so many more questions than answers. Through all of this as we continue to place our hope and trust in Jesus our faith has grown immensely. And we wouldn’t trade that for anything.

Fires is a song that has become an anthem in our house. It has helped us heal and is giving us new perspective on pain and suffering. But, the idea for this song actually came someone else’s journey.

This song was written for a man named Nathan. A husband and father of three, working multiple jobs to pay the bills but still couldn’t make ends meet. He was behind on car payments, medical bills, and was about to lose his house. In between shifts as a hotel valet, Nathan stepped inside to find a Christian songwriters showcase taking place where he heard them sharing songs testifying to God’s faithfulness. So moved by what he had experienced, Nathan felt compelled to leave a note on the car windshield of one of the songwriters. It read, “Barring a miracle I am on the verge of losing my home. Your songs were very inspiring to me as a believer whose faith is very weak right now. Thank you, Nathan the valet”. After reading the note left on her car, this songwriter took to social media and shared Nathan’s note. That’s when a community of believers stepped in, giving Nathan the miracle he needed. Enough money was raised to save his house and pay off some of these debts.

Looking back, I realize now that God gave me Nathan’s story so I could walk through mine with my daughter. To help me along the way and allow my faith to rise up. To know God has not left me in this trial, rather he is walking it with me, guiding me through the pain. Refining and purifying my heart that I may know him more.
