A worried mom prays for her prodigal child

Amanda’s story

After a long, difficult week, I found myself on my way to work this morning, listening to WBGL, when I caught the end of a segment about the book The Body Keeps the Score. As I listened, I felt a strong sense that God wanted me to hear it. I couldn’t shake the feeling that this moment was orchestrated and that the message wasn’t a coincidence. With that thought in mind, I felt compelled to share my story with you.

I am a single mother of two boys, ages 10 and 12. I’ve been raising them on my own for the past eight years, with their father having them a limited time each month. Our journey has been challenging, filled with heartache and hardship.

Since the divorce, my sons and I have grown closer. We are a team, supporting one another through the hardships. One of my sons once told me, “You make me feel safe, Mom.” I’ve worked hard to rebuild our lives. I earned my Associates degree, graduated with honors with my Bachelors degree, and am now pursuing a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Through it all, we continue to heal. A doctor recently recommended the same book that I heard about on WBGL, The Body Keeps the Score.

We have come so far, but the journey is far from over. Our family has been through so much, but we are determined to heal and move forward. It is my hope that in sharing our experiences, I can help someone else find the strength to take that first step toward breaking free from their own situation. You don’t have to live in fear. You don’t have to stay in a situation that’s destroying you. There is support, there is love, and there is a future beyond the darkness.
