Lyrics

How did we get here?
All castaway on a lonely shore
I can see in your eyes, dear
It’s hard to take for a moment more
We’ve got to

Burn the ships, cut the ties
Send a flare into the night
Say a prayer, turn the tide
Dry your tears and wave goodbye

Step into a new day
We can rise up from the dust and walk away
We can dance upon our heartache, yeah
So light a match, leave the past, burn the ships
And don’t you look back

Don’t let it arrest you
This fear is fear of fallin’ again
And if you need a refuge
I will be right here until the end
Oh, it’s time to

Burn the ships, cut the ties
Send a flare into the night
Say a prayer, turn the tide
Dry your tears and wave goodbye

Step into a new day
We can rise up from the dust and walk away
We can dance upon our heartache, yeah
So light a match, leave the past, burn the ships
And don’t you look back

So long to shame, walk through the sorrow
Out of the fire into tomorrow
So flush the pills, face the fear
Feel the wave disappear
We’re comin’ clear, we’re born again
Our hopeful lungs can breathe again
Oh, we can breathe again

Step into a new day
We can rise up from the dust and walk away
We can dance upon our heartache, yeah
So light a match, leave the past, burn the ships
And step into a new day
We can rise up from the dust and walk away
We can dance upon our heartache, yeah
So light a match, leave the past, burn the ships
And don’t you look back

And don’t you look back
And don’t you look back

About This Song

a few notes from Joe B., Music Director

Back in the early 1500's Hernán Cortés set sail to Mexico - and the way the story goes - he knew his crew would not be completely committed to the mission if they had a way out. If there was a way of retreat (and easier way) it would have been much more difficult to be committed to stay and fight (the harder thing). So Cortés ordered his men to burn the ships. (Actually, this did not happen. Not exactly - Most scholars believe instead he had all but one of the boats scuttled. And they did leave one ship intact, kept for riches and treasures to be sent back to their king in Spain.) Sorry, I digress. Any how, as humans, by default, most of us have an escape plan. Which in most cases is a very good thing. However, when it comes to taking a step of faith directed by God and doing what we know He wants us to do, it is not good to have an escape plan. One of my favorite movies is the Dark Knight trilogy and in the final movie Dark Knight Rises, Bruce was imprisoned in the pit. In order to escape and stop Bane (The villain), he must make an extremely dangerous and impossible climb that, if he makes one wrong move, he will fall to his death. No one had ever successfully climbed out before. He, understandably, takes hold of a rope tied off to the wall and ties it around his waste, so if he misses he won't die. Unfortunately, every single attempt is a failure. Until, he removes the rope. His very next attempt is successful.

So many times when God is wanting to bring victory in our lives over a stronghold, we need to trust Him fully. Having a secret stash, escape hatch or safety net keeps us from living in the full victory. We have to be willing to follow God and not look back. This song could become an anthem for Christ Followers willing to trust God fully in His leading in our lives. I get excited just thinking about what our world could look like if we were all brave enough to trust God fully and burn the ships!
